Company Profile:
The Universidad de Málaga was founded in 1975 and it is one of the most dynamic and fastest growing higher education and research institutions in Spain. In 1987 the Universidad de Málaga created the “Research Results Transfer Office” – OTRI. As an integral part of the OTRI the European Projects Office (OPE) offers versatile and highly qualified support especially tailored to the management of European research projects. As a result, UMA became an active member of European and international scientific societies with a profound experience in national, European and international research programs. This has earned the University the reputation of a reliable and requested partner. Within the last two decades the Universidad de Málaga has been partner in 69 international projects. At present the Universidad de Málaga counts 19 active European projects, with 13 active FP6/FP7 projects. Furthermore, there are 4 FP7 projects that have been approved by the European Commission and are currently in negotiations. So far 4 projects have been coordinated by Universidad de Malaga and 2 more FP7 projects with UMA in the lead are in the state of negotiation or proposal, respectively; the first being an ambitious international mobility project – COFUND – involving 12 selected researchers and the latter comprising 7 international partners. The KHAOS research group is part of the Software Engineering Group (GISUM). Formed in 1990, GISUM has been awarded the highest grade of distinction (“group of excellence”) by the Regional Government of Andalusia. The research lines developed by the KHAOS group are Data and Knowledge Management in the Semantic Web (Scalable reasoning on very large data sets, Middleware based on ontologies, Semantic extension of data bases) and Composition and Adaptation of Software Components and Services.

Semantic Geographical Information Systems

What we offer:
DBOWL (see SIMO profile DBOWL: Large Scale Reasoning) is a reasoned developed as an extension of a Database Management System for efficient reasoning over large amounts of data. As far as GIS databases are implemented also as extensions of a DBMS, DBOWL can be extended to enable the evaluation of spatial operations inside semantic queries in an efficient way. This solution will combine the capacity of find new knowledge on the data (using Semantics) and combine it with spatial operations to filter the results depending on geographical features of the data.

DBOWL: Large Scale Reasoning

What we offer:
Reasoning over large amounts of data is a common problem in many domains aiming at applying Semantic Web technologies. Reasoning algorithms are not scalable and are usually main memory oriented. DBOWL [1] is a persistent and scalable OWL-DL reasoner. DBOWL stores the OWL ontologies in a relational database. Experimental results show that, with respect to performance, query response times are very good and DBOWL scales much higher than traditional reasoners.

Semantics and Moving Objects

What we offer:
DBOWL (see SIMO profile DBOWL: Large Scale Reasoning) has been extended to enable the evaluation of spatial operations inside semantic queries in an efficient way (see SIMO profile Semantic Geographical Information Systems). However, not all the spatial objects are static, and solutions to deal with object movement has been researched. This solution proposes an ontology for representing and reasoning over the movement of moving objects.

Semantic Content Recommendation

What we offer:
One of our research interests is focused on the development of semantically enhanced Recommender Systems, leveraged by domain ontologies describing the items to recommend, the users and even their context. In fact, semantic features play a very important role in the recommendation process, since they are the basic principles underlying the users’ choices.

Linked Data and Semantic Search

What we offer:
Our Research Group has large experience in developing Semantic Web applications and most recently on Linked Data applications. In this sense, semantic search is possible using the semantics published by Linked Data repositories. The combination of traditional search engine techniques (indexing of contents) with semantics of the data enables powerful and precise search capabilities.
