Educational applications of 3D games

What we offer:
Games are a special kind of simulations with entertainment as goal. If a learning tool can be disguised as a game, then we get the motivation that the learning process requires. Our goal is to explore the power of simulations in game disguise as learning-by-doing environments. From all possible domains, and due to our previous experience, we are applying these ideas to teaching programming related technologies and abilities such as object-oriented programming and object-oriented frameworks.
The vision relies on previous and ongoing research on: case-based reasoning, knowledge representation, framework documentation, and natural language generation. The first incarnation of this vision is Javy, an adventure where the player has to free a country from the tyranny, by solving quizzes that resembles the inner workings of the java virtual machine.

What we are looking for:
The R&D group seeks for industrial partners interested on developing computer-based educational tools. These can be medium sized companies with an emphasis on research from the IT world, or companies from the computer game industry interested on new applications of their technology.

e-Adventure: platform for developing educational games and simulations

What we offer:
The platform is aiming to facilitate the integration of educational games and game-like simulations in educational processes in general and Virtual Learning Environments (VLE) in particular. It is being developed with three main objectives:
•Reduction of the development costs for educational games
•Incorporation of education-specific features in game development tools
•Integration of the resulting games with existing courseware in Virtual Learning Environments
The core of the project is the educational game engine, that runs games defined using the language. Authors can use the graphical editor to create the games or directly access the human-readable source documents that describe the adventures using XML markup. With , any person can write an educational point & click adventure game

What we are looking for:
We wish to promote the use of the tools developed as part of the project.

The group is looking for collaborations with SME or enterprises that want to create innovative educational content using simulations and games. These simulations and games are very easy to translate to a different language and have a high maintainability.
Specially suited for industries and sector with a high degree of procedural knowledge (medicine, labor risk, defence, etc).

A group of researchers of the Dep. of Biblioteconomy and Documentation at Complutense University of Madrid offers an information management service following the more advanced documentation techniques. Real time systems visual development environment

What we offer:
A group of the Universidad Complutense de Madrid has elaborated a system to develop complex real time embedded software by visual modelling and with automatic code generation. Based on real time object oriented methodology this system is intrinsically object oriented, specific for real time systems and C++ code can be generated. It also has a graphic debugger of the developed software.
The fact that the system has been developed for low cost applications is a big advantage, which makes it commercially competitive. The versatility of the product is other important advantage since there are currently adapted versions for RTKernel, RTAI and QNX for hard real time, and W32 for soft real time.

What we are looking for:
The software may be used by any industry or research organization developing or wanting to develope real time software. With this system it can be achieved a great improvement in developing time and, also, a greater confident in the developed real time software.

We provide the software, except for the operative system, the required training and technical assistance.

Dynamic forecast

What we offer:
A R&D group from Complutense University of Madrid has developed a methodology to model the uncertainty through dynamic predictions over time of any event subject to uncertainty. This event may be the flow down of a river in avenue regime, the demand for material to a warehouse, and so on.
The technology is capable of being applied to other contexts with a minimum previous work.
This technology allows a better parametric modelling of problems, to represent by probabilities the information on parameters and to make predictions using probability distributions. Provides solutions to incorporate information from the experts. Provides automatically a quality control.

What we are looking for:
We look for different collaboration projects with companies that need to make temporary forecast and are interested in investing for the fitting of the model. This collaboratioin will include:
• Study of the predicting problem of the client and determination of the way the Kalman filter can be applied to each particular problem.
• Development of the model and adjusting their elements to the historical data to make predictions in real time.
• Development of the computer program applied to the client's needs.
• Training of staff of the company for the better utilization of the program and its adaptation to new situations.

iTest: a web application for learner-directed assessment (and self-assessment)

What we offer:
iTest is a web application that, in a few words, allows instructors to configure exams and students to take them. It distinguishes two types of users and hence student and teacher interfaces have been implemented. A teacher user may define a syllabus of the course, work with questions, manage exams, register his students, view the grade of any student, and analyse statistics. A student user can take exams previously configured by the teacher of the course, and also review the taken exams online which is crucial for self-assessment.
The tool automatically grades the tests showing the score on the screen to the student taking the exam immediately after finishing.

What we are looking for:
iTest could be of interest for companies, manufacturers and institutions of any country and size, including educative centres, calculation centres at universities and private companies related to information technologies. The cost of acquisition or implementing the iTest by a company/institution would be negotiable depending on the necessities and the collaborative frame established.

Magnetic signature system for document authentication

What we offer:
The Group of Magnetic Devices has invented a system to authenticate documents based on the magnetic signature of a set of magnetic nanowires. The signature is determined by the material of the wires (magnetic, non-magnetic or an alloy), their distribution in the document, and the common direction of the magnetic anisotropy.
The control over the composition of the wires and its distribution in the membrane increases the number of available signatures.
The relative orientation of the wires and the document, together with the higher surface density, enhance signal detectability.
Fabrication costs are lower as compared with magnetic signature systems, because of the reduction in the quantity of magnetic material used and the easier production process.

What we are looking for:
Being a cheap and easy technique, we believe this technology could be of interest to companies of any size in the field of security systems, or companies who produce nanoparticles or nanowires for various applications.
The viability of the detection system has been tested on a laboratory prototype. Companies interested would have to get involved in the remaining process before reaching commercialization status

Rigorous evaluation of embedded and real-time systems

What we offer:
The Testing and Performance Evaluation research group of the UCM studies rigorous techniques to carry on testing and performance evaluation activities. These techniques should be transferred to adequate real systems. In particular, the group would like to apply them to everyday devices.
Quality assurance by using rigorous testing techniques is a protection activity. Its main goal is to detect errors during the initial development stages in order to avoid that these errors are either propagated to ulterior stages or that they become faults of the developed system. Our technologies put an emphasis on temporal aspects that are usually overlooked and produce an increase of the revision and mantenance costs of systems.

What we are looking for:
The research group is looking forward to collaborate with companies producing these devices and that are interested in the application of rigorous techniques to improve the quality of these devices.
The group will collaborate with developers of systems where temporal properties play an important role. Specific examples of this type of systems are appliances and certain devices embedded in automoviles. The cost associated with the integration of this tecnology could be very limited since the technology might be implemented by the same team that it is currently in charge of testing and quality assurance activities.
